WITHIN THE LIGHT
Two years ago, I picked up my art supplies after a hiatus of studying, working, and other excuses.
‘Lightning Strike’ balances a frightening display of nature’s power with the whimsy of the two creatures waiting for each other in the house and boat. What are they? Where are they going? Are they scared?

‘Looking Up’ captures the solitude of observing the night sky on a walk in the woods. The comet drowns the scene in light, offering companionship and guidance - but only for a moment.

Original media: pigment ink pen on paper
Printed on 18 mil satin-coated art quality poster canvas

‘House on Fire’ offers no explanation as to how the fire started, nor the involvement of the shadowy figures. Is this intentional arson, or an unfortunate case of a cigarette left lit? Are the figures watching with satisfaction or fear? Is the viewer an observer or a participant? The piece calls on the viewer to question their firsthand assumptions, even about themselves.

Looking at what was popular at exhibitions and on social media, I challenged myself to incorporate color into my work. I had never been drawn to working with color, as much as I appreciate a good palette - it is my artistic achilles heel. This time, I was determined to face it head on.
As you can see from this collection, it didn’t work. Every piece felt like a poor translation of what I had imagined in my head. After each failed attempt, I would return to my pens for a palette cleanser. Working in black and white, drawing, playing with negative space: these all felt natural. One of these respites developed into the first piece in my collection, ‘Lightning Strike.’ I loved exploring the fantasy of the scene and the interplay of the sky and ocean. With encouragement, I leaned further in to ink illustration, making ‘Looking Up’ and ‘House on Fire.’
I reveled in the calm I felt working on this collection. Without the pressure of involving color, each piece became a meditation. Maybe this is a truer expression of myself. Maybe it is just way of staying in my comfort zone. Regardless, I am incredibly excited to introduce my first collection, ‘Within the Light.’
